| Taking the Lead with New Process Options. | | | No other twin-screw extruder from Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer offers more features and processing advantages for food applications and applications with a high volume requirement than the ZSK MEGAvolume. Since the introduction of the Continua series in the early seventies with screw speeds up to 400 rpm for HTST (high-temperature, short-time) processes in the food sector, Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer has in close cooperation with its customers been setting new standards – in mechanical and pro–cess engineering and in optimizing product quality. The ZSK MEGAvolume is an ideal extruder for products with low bulk density, poor feeding behavior, or high percentage of fiber, in the food industry. With this further expansion of the ZSK MEGA series, Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer offers the perfect solution for virtually every processing task by twin-screw extruders for the food, feed and pharmaceutical industry. The ZSK MEGAvolume offers pronounced cost advantages over the preceding Continua model. The Investment costs drop to about 65% with a simultaneous increase in flexibility due to higher speeds and twice the torque.
Development of flexibility and productivity shown by comparison of a Continua with 170 mm diameter, with a higher-performance ZSK MEGAvolume with a screw diameter of only 98 mm.
| Success Factors | | | Screw volume. More deeply cut screw flights with Do / Di ratio of 1.8 result in a distinctly higher free volume.
Application advantages:
| - | | Improved feed of flours, meals, starches, and additives with low bulk density |
| - | | Lower shear |
| - | | Reduced thermal loading of the raw materials |
Screw speed. The ZSK MEGAvolume series is designed for speeds of up to 1,800 rpm.
Torque. The ZSK MEGAvolume series is dimensioned for a specific torque of Md / a3 = 8.7 Nm / cm3. For torque limited processes this high value provides economical and process engineering advantages:
| - | | Enables high throughputs |
| - | | Large range of adjustment in screw-speed and residence-time for critical products. |
Application area. The appropriate machine for food-processes having needs of specific mechanical energy input around 0.1 KWh / kg. The ZSK MEGAvolume is offering great values in throughput determining free volume.
Economical benefits:
| - | | Significantly improved cost / performance ratio |
| - | | Triple to quadruple increase in throughput |
| - | | At the same specified throughput: Use of smaller machines, i.e. lower investment and operating costs |
| - | | Increased throughput range |
 Development of the free volume.
 Comparison of standardized throughput.
