Processing of heavy layer

Twin screw extruders from Coperion have proven successful for the production of heavy layer for many decades. High-filled compounds for heavy layer are used for example in the automobile industry for damping engine and driving noise. The extruded films are backed partly with felts, foams or carpets. They are then formed into the desired shape on presses or by deep drawing and cut.

The split-speed process has established itself on the market for the processing of heavy layer. In this process the backbone polymers/elastomers, small components and some of the liquids are fed into the first extruder barrel in separate streams and weighed gravimetrically.

Abrasive fillers are added to the plastic compound downstream by a twin screw side feeder. The advantages of the split-feed process are in the gentle handling of the raw materials and the resulting improvement in the product quality.

Direct extrusion or in-line compounding enables the production of semi-finished products such as foils, plates, tubes or profiles in one work process – intermediate pelletizing is omitted completely. Coperion is considered a specialist for the production of direct extrusion plants.
