Construction of new compounding plant in Saudi Arabia
Compounding plant on a turnkey basis for 43,000 tons per year
Coperion has succesfully completed the construction of the new compounding plant of SPECIALTY CHEM, a subsidiary of SABIC, in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The work involved engineering, procurement and construction of four compounding lines for Engineering Plastics and Thermoplastic Olefins (TPO). The total production capacity is 43,000 t per year.
The professional cooperation between the individual Coperion sites in Weingarten and Stuttgart (Germany), Ferrara (Italy) and Coperion Middle East (Saudi Arabia) assured the outstanding project execution with respect to cost, time and quality specified by SABIC. With this project Coperion demonstrated its worldwide leadership and expertise in the construction of compounding plants on a turnkey basis. During the construction phase, Coperion’s site management safety system ensured around 250,000 safe man hours.
The construction activities started on March 3, 2012, and the mechanical completion for the four extrusion lines was reached within the schedule. On the construction site, Coperion installed 100 tons of steel structures and 150 tons of equipment. In addition, 2,300 inch diameter weld joints of piping material were executed.
Due to the modular construction of the systems and its site construction expertise, Coperion was able to maintain the very tight schedule of this project.

Coperion builds its biggest degassing extruder so far
Coperion: First ZSK 420 sold to Asia
Coperion recently sold its new ZSK series 420 twin screw extruder to an Asian customer. The machine is to be used for the compounding of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and polyolefin elastomers. This compounding process requires highly effective degassing though this is not the only reason that the customer decided in favor of the ZSK 420 MEGAcompounder.
The free volume in the processing zone necessary for the degassing process is 25% larger than that of the ZSK 380 which to date was the largest model of the ZSK MEGAcompounder series. The main performance ratings of a ZSK 420 are its maximum motor power of 26,400 kW, its specific torque of 9.3 Nm/cm³ and its maximum screw speed of 320 rpm.
For this particular application the ZSK 420 extruder is fed with a polymer solution that enters the processing zone in a superheated state. The devolatizing sections of the extruder operate with a stepped vacuum and ensure, within a broad range of viscosities and types of polymer, that only a very low hydrocarbon content remains in the resulting polymer. The discharge section of the ZSK 420 is equipped with a melt pump and an underwater pelletizer.
The extruder was built in Stuttgart in 2012 and will be assembled and put into service – with the assistance of Coperion’s local agent – in the course of this year.

Relocation to larger premises in Offenbach
PELL-TEC is now Coperion Pelletizing Technology
Just over a year ago Coperion acquired the majority stake in PELL-TEC Pelletizing Technology GmbH, Niedernberg / Germany. Effective March 1, 2013, PELL-TEC has changed its company name to Coperion Pelletizing Technology GmbH. The company will continue operations under its current managing directors Michael Schuler and Bernhard Stern.
Coperion Pelletizing Technology recently relocated from Niedernberg to the Coperion site at Offenbach / Germany. At the new location in Offenbach more office space, considerably larger factory grounds as well as better production and assembly facilities are available. Development and construction of strand pelletizing systems for standard and engineering plastics will continue to be the focus.
Thus decisive prerequisites for the improvement and expansion of the product and continued broadening and deepening of competence as a manufacturer of pelletizing systems for compounding extruders has been accomplished. The company is currently developing larger pelletizing systems suitable for output rates of over 6,000 kg/hour, as well as pelletizers featuring higher wear resistance and more powerful drive systems for use in processing engineering plastics with high glass fibre content. The output rates of a specially developed series of pelletizers have been optimized for combined operation with Coperion’s series ZSK Mc18 compounding extruders. The combination of these compounding extruders and the strand pelletizers constitutes a reliably functioning unit that can operate without concern about the compatibility of mechanical or control system interfaces.
