Treffert meets exacting demands with special compounds produced on ZSK 32 Mc18 smart

In order to meet the extremely exacting requirements of product purity, Treffert has installed the new extrusion line with the ZSK 32 Mc18 smart in a closed room with restricted access.

The Treffert Group, an acknowledged expert in the production of masterbatches and special-purpose compounds, has once again extended its fleet of machines with one of our twin screw extruders. This time it is a ZSK 32 Mc18 smart, which was first presented at K 2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Equipped with 32 mm diameter screws, this extruder has been put into service at Treffert SAS, the group's facility at Ste-Marie-aux-Chênes in the Lorraine region of France. Heinrich Treffert, CEO of Treffert SAS and managing shareholder of Treffert GmbH & Co. KG, says, “With the new extruder we shall be producing mainly masterbatches and concentrates for laser and other sensitive applications. The focus is on the medical, pharmaceutical and automotive industry.”

The design of the ZSK 32 Mc18 smart is extremely ergonomic. The axes of the screw shafts are positioned at a height of only 800 mm from the floor, thus making the extruder with its completely enclosed base frame readily accessible for maintenance and for easy cleaning. All connections, water supply system and manifold are integrated into the base frame and provide smooth surfaces of the machine enclosures. The extruder ideally meets the demands that Treffert makes on its machines for the production of materials destined for the manufacture of medical products. Besides the extruder itself, we have also supplied the complete pelletizing system: the waterbath, the strand suction device, the strand pelletizer and the pellet screener all come from Coperion Pelletizing Technology.

Operating under the slogan “Colour follows function”, the Treffert Group has during the past several years been concentrating on the production of masterbatches and compounds for the manufacture of medical products and optical materials destined for highly demanding applications. Compared with the classical methods of masterbatch manufacture, these elevated demands have also generated more demanding requirements on the production systems themselves. High product purity and the avoidance of every possible kind of contamination during production now take absolute priority. It was these requirements in particular that were the guiding principle for the development of the new ZSK 32 Mc18 smart. Both our expertise and the practical experience of Treffert as a long-standing user of ZSK technology went into the development of the ZSK 32 Mc18 smart.

Coperion receives order from Total

Compounding plant on lump sum turnkey basis

Compounding plant for Total

Total, a leading energy player on the international stage, entrusted us in June 2014 with the realization of a compounding plant in France, on lump sum turnkey basis. The plant will produce PP-compounds for diverse applications with a yearly production rate of 30 kt/y.

Coperion’s scope of work comprises all services and supplies which are required to build this plant on a green field within Total’s Carling complex:

  • Engineering, procurement and construction for all disciplines
  • The process core with two Coperion twin screw extruders ZSK Mc18, Coperion K-Tron feeding equipment, a classifier of Rotex and handling and storage of raw material and finished product incl. control system by Coperion
  • A new laboratory extruder ZSK 26 Mc18 with feeding equipment of Coperion K-Tron and strand pelletizer of Coperion Pelletizing Technology
  • The power supply for the process part as well as for the complete complex
  • Earthworks and leveling of the site
  • Piling works and foundations
  • Under and above ground network for power, fire water, cooling water, drainage and all other required utilities
  • Building complexes for production, administration, maintenance and storage of raw and finished product
  • Roads, parking lots and other graveled areas
  • Construction, installation and commissioning of the process core and all other systems of the plant ready for start-up

Two aspects were crucial to Coperion’s success in winning this contract with Total after a competitive tender. On the one hand we offered a plant concept optimizing investment without compromising safety, functionality and operability. On the other hand, it was our sound realization strategy, our process know-how, combined with deep understanding of all subsequent disciplines and project management expertise for this challenging project which helped us to achieve this success. In the meantime, the project is in realization phase and on right track.It will be finished in first half-year of 2016.

On display in booth 6406 in hall A6 at this year’s Fakuma will be the BSP-135 Bulk Solids PumpTM feeder on a pivoting base as well as a Gravimetric Batch Blender with integrated Vacuum Receiver and Powder Feeder. The patented Coperion K-Tron Bulk Solids Pump (BSP) feeder line has been specifically designed and engineered to provide gentle, precise feeding of free-flowing pellets, granules, and friable bulk materials. BSP feeders do not use the usual screws/augers, belts or vibratory trays to convey the material. They utilize positive displacement action to feed free flowing materials with highest accuracy, offering uniform discharge, consistent volume and gentle handling.

Gravimetric Batch Blender with integrated Vacuum Receiver and Powder Feeder

Our Gravimetric Batch Blenders are available in various sizes from 0.5 to 25 kg total batch size and include up to eight main feed elements depending on the unit. Each unit is designed with an integrated loading platform for mounting material loaders or vacuum receivers. The blenders include an advanced metering and weighing system that accurately controls all ingredients of every batch to the desired amounts and is not averaged over multiple batches.

The Gravimetric Batch Blender which is on display at our Fakuma booth is equipped with two integrated Vacuum Receivers. The Series 2400 Vacuum Receivers are designed to high quality standards for pneumatically conveying powders, pellets, granular and recycling materials. Six models in several designs cover conveying rates from 330 to 6,800 kg/hr [720 to 15,000 lb/hr].

Besides the Vacuum Receiver the Gravimetric Batch Blender is equipped with a Powder Feeder. Twin Screw Powder Feeders are designed to optimally handle difficult materials such as pigments, sticky, bridging or flooding powders, fibers and fiberglass.
