Fully automatic transfer from die head to pelletizer
New automatic strand conveying system ASC
Coperion's automatic strand conveying system ASC ensures fully automatic transfer from die head to pelletizer. Designed to work in conjunction with Coperion's two largest strand pelletizers, the SP 500 HD and the SP 700 HD, this conveyance system is likewise available in two sizes: the ASC 500 for throughput rates of up to 3.5 t/hr and the ASC 700 for up to 5 t/hr.
The conveyance system automatically guides the extruded strands via a cooling water chute and downstream conveyor belt into the feed mechanism of the pelletizer. A likewise automatic start-up mechanism facilitates the start-up operation, while any possible machine malfunctions caused by broken strands are avoided by the system's ability to rethread the strands.
The new SK92 die head has been developed specially for high throughput rates. Homogeneous heating/cooling ensures completely uniform extrusion of the strands across the entire width of the extrusion die. The die head is distinguished by its optimal rheology and efficient heat transfer, providing maximum possible throughput while ensuring gentle handling of the product. This feature makes the SK92 die head ideally suited to the increased throughput capabilities of the ZSK Mc18 extruder series.
The new automatic strand conveying system may be used for a broad spectrum of materials. It is equipped as standard with a vertical adjustment permitting different points of strand placement on the water chute depending on the material being processed.

Loss-in-weight feeders: improved D5 scale with enhanced features

Coperion K-Tron recently released the redesigned D5 scale for its high-accuracy loss-in-weight feeders. The new design encompasses a variety of improvements, including a focus on hygienic applications and ATEX 3D rating already in the basic version, making it the ideal choice for any type of environment. Along with changes in the manufacturing process, the redesign has further improved accuracy and reliability of the D5 scale.
The new Coperion K-Tron D5 scale is available as a standard stainless steel version or as a pharmaceutical version featuring polished material contact surfaces Ra 0.8. The benefits of the new scale design include better cleanability and reduced displacement when under high weight load.
Versatile mounting options enable the D5 scale to adapt to different installation sites. Both the standard and pharmaceutical versions of the scale can be provided with an X-frame support. The X-frame for pharmaceutical environments has a special design that meets stringent pharma requirements.
Where no X-frame support is desired, the D5 scale can be provided with four small feet, raising the scale above the subjacent surface and providing enough space for cleaning underneath it. Here the cable entry gland is located within a foot. A project-specific baseplate, frame or platform can be provided instead of the X-frame or feet as an option. The new design is completely compatible with the previous model, making replacement in the field easy and spare parts interchangeable.
The basic version of the D5 scale is rated ATEX II 3D Ex tc IIIC T60°C Dc IP65 for explosion protection. Soon to follow is the intrinsically safe version of the redesigned D5 for ATEX category 2GD (Gas Zones 3, 2, and Dust Zone 21).
Coperion awarded contract for a container filling system
Loading and unloading of containers with powders and pellets
Container loading and unloading is becoming increasingly important during bulk material production, as many manufacturers use this transport method for export purposes. As a supplier of overall systems solutions for plastics manufacturing, Coperion also installs container loading and unloading systems for 20 ft., 40 ft. and high-cube containers. These are suitable for most applications and a number of powdered and pelletized bulk materials, including difficult products such as PTA, some of which must be conveyed in inert gas systems.
Recently Coperion was awarded a contract for the installation of a comprehensive container loading system for polyolefin pellets. This system is hallmarked by its simple operation and high loading capacity. Containers are filled at eight loading stations with a capacity of up to 40 t/h within a maximum loading time of 25 minutes. In this case the Fluidload pneumatic conveying method is used for loading. Two containers are always positioned directly next to one another. Four of the eight containers are filled while the other four containers are being prepared for the loading procedure.
The system is extremely easy to operate from four operating platforms suspended on rails that can be moved electronically. When one container has been filled, the operator standing on the platform travels approximately five meters to the adjacent container.
With this loading system it is possible to fill 20 ft., 40 ft. and high cube containers from the rear, with the container remaining on the trailer during the entire operation. The control for this intelligent loading system was also designed by Coperion.
Coperion supplies two different technologies for unloading containers:
1. The container remains on the truck and is tipped by means of the truck's own tipping device
For this unloading method Coperion has developed a rotary valve station that is hooked onto the rear container wall with a forklift truck. It is connected to the conveying system by hoses.
2. The container is tipped and unloaded using a stationary tipping platform
In collaboration with Westphalen & Kann, Coperion has developed a tipping platform especially for use with truck trailers without a built-in tipping device. To this purpose the truck reverses slowly into the tipping station. The container is secured at the corners with fixing bolts, the doors are opened and locked in place. The container is then hydraulically lifted – the truck remains in the tipping station - and is tipped up to an angle of 50°. After the unloading process the tipping station is returned to the start position and the container is lowered onto the truck, where it is secured and closed. The truck can then drive out of the station.
