Processing of masterbatch

The processing of masterbatch makes great demands on the compounding process: The pigment and additive parts must be mixed into the base polymer absolutely homogeneously. The co-rotating twin screw extruders from Coperion, formerly Werner & Pfleiderer, are particularly suitable for the processing of masterbatch because of their excellent mixing properties and gentle product handling.

With our extensive process know-how we adapt all the process steps from dosing, through raw materials feeding, conveying, melting, dispersing, homogenizing, devolatilizing, pressure build-up, filtering and pelletizing exactly to the requirements of your masterbatch recipes. This gives you exactly what you expect: a compounding system that is optimally tailored to your application.

From the laboratory extruder to the production machine with high throughput rates, the Coperion twin screw extruders all operate extremely economically. Features such as the quick change feed hopper, the die head with swivel device and the quick change ZS-B side feeder enable fast, easy cleaning of the extruder and therefore economical formulation and color changes.

Premix process

Premix process for the processing of masterbatch

In the premix process all the masterbatch components are premixed in a mixer and then fed into the twin screw extruder by a volumetric feeder.

The advantages
Good product quality with high throughput rate
High pigment and additive loadings possible
Gentle product handling
Low wear

Split-feed process

Split-feed process for the processing of masterbatch

In the split-feed process, the polymer is fed into the twin screw extruder's feed barrel. The additives are fed into the extruder through a ZS-B twin screw side feeder after the melt zone.

The advantages
No pigment loss during start-up
Simple operation of all system components
Very high shearing effect to break up pigment agglomerates
Fast cleaning when changing colors
High economy

Color matching process

Color matching process for the processing of masterbatch

In the color matching process different monobatches are pre-mixed or fed into the extruder separately. The extruder plasticizes and homogenizes them so that a masterbatch in the desired color shade is produced.

quick change feed hopper

Quick-change infeed funnel in compounders for processing masterbatch

The quick change feed hopper is only fixed to the process section by screws so that it can be pushed aside quickly and easily. A removable, polished insert in the feed hopper prevents soiling of the barrel wall.

Extruder die head with pivoting assembly

Extruder die head with pivoting assembly for the processing of masterbatch

The extruder die heads in masterbatch compounders can be swivelled easily to the side by loosening a few bolts. Its optimized flow geometry ensures the even extrusion even with high-filled products.

ZS-B side feeder

ZS-B side feeder for the processing of masterbatch

The ZS-B side feeder is disassembled with a few actions. The screws can be cleaned quickly and effectively.
