Successful Modernization of a Pharma Coating Line

Wiewelhove switches from a manual to an automated production set-up for improved process and batch control

Regular overhauls and improvements usually have a huge impact on production processes – both in terms of efficiency and control capabilities. Gabler Engineering, a brand of the Coperion Food, Health & Nutrition Division, has once again updated a coating line at the production facilities of Wiewelhove in Ibbenbüren, Germany. The contract manufacturer for solid pharmaceuticals tasked the Gabler service team to bring their equipment to the latest technological standards and optimize the entire coating process according to their needs.

The partnership between Wiewelhove and Gabler started back in 2016 when the first coating systems at hand were overhauled by Gabler. Up until now the set-up was not fully automated and required manual application of the coating solution which led to a longer processing time.

Wiewelhove required a modern and fully automated production set-up ensuring an exact and optimized coating process which can be easily overseen by the machine operators. The inlet and extracted air needed to be changed into a guided system and with higher air quantity. Last but not least, the customer required badge control along with the possibility to print out badge protocols in order to improve production planning.

Gabler updates coating line to latest technological standards

Within the scope of this modernization project the Gabler team completely overhauled the entire coating line and updated the system to the latest technological standards. The coating solution is now applied via a high-pressure spraying system which ensures higher control over the process. In addition, the airing set-up was updated, and a suction hood was added for an optimized air flow. As a result, inlet air is provided in the form of conditioned air and in a significantly higher quantity (approximately 1200m3/h) which is better suited for the process at hand. Through these improvements in recipe and process control the Wiewelhove team is able to even better plan the production in alignment with order intake.
