Progressing Towards a Fully Operational Herbold Meckesheim and Coperion Recycling Plant

Exciting news from our customer Magpet Polymer Pvt Ltd from India: The first part of the bottle-to-bottle recycling system developed collaboratively by Coperion and Herbold Meckesheim has been installed. The Herbold Meckesheim granulators, together with the washing line, have recently been successfully commissioned in India.

This initial phase of the process gently and energy-efficiently converts PET bottles into high-quality PET flakes and plays an important role in the production of Magpet’s newly launched product, Metapet rPET. The system includes all the key components of a Herbold Meckesheim washing line, including a step dryer for gentle drying with minimal fines generation as well as hot washing with hydrocyclone separation.

The successful commissioning of the Herbold Meckesheim plant section is a first step in the realization of the complete bottle-to-bottle system, which is designed for a throughput of 5,500 kg/h.

In a few weeks, the system will be expanded to include conveying, feeding and a ZSK recycling extruder, which will be integrated with the Herbold Meckesheim equipment. Once the entire system has been installed, the washed PET flakes are transferred to a ZSK, where they are gently melted, intensively dispersed and processed into a homogeneous mass. The twin screw technology of the ZSK efficiently transfers the energy into the melt and processes the PET very gently at low temperatures. Thanks to the twin screw extruder's high torque of 18 Nm/cm³, the PET's residence time in the extruder process section is very short. Degradation of the polymer chains is minimal and the product quality achieved is extremely high.

After leaving the ZSK recycling extruder, the still-warm material flow is transferred to an underwater pelletizer via a gear pump and condensed and decontaminated in an SSP reactor. Once the entire system has been installed, Magpet will use it to produce Metapet food-grade rPET pellets.

Indroneel Goho, President & CEO, Magpet Polymers Pvt Ltd, is very pleased with the success of this initial phase: “The launch of Metapet is an important milestone in our journey towards the first truly circular PET ecosystem in India.”

“With Metapet, we are reconciling purpose and profit. With this product, we are acting responsibly making an important contribution to a cleaner, greener planet for future generations,” says Devendra Surana, Founder & Managing Director, Magpet Polymers Pvt Ltd, proudly.

“We at Coperion and Herbold Meckesheim are very excited that the first part of the Magpet recycling plant has successfully started operation. Our partnership with Magpet showcases how technology and a strong vision can establish a truly circular PET ecosystem. We look forward to the next steps in our journey together,” says Markus Parzer, President Performance Materials Division, Coperion.
