Turning Down the Heat: Smarter Shear Control in Twin Screw Compounding
Twin screw extruders are highly effective tools for efficiently and uniformly applying shear to melt and mix thermoplastic compounds. However, a fine balance often exists between achieving optimal homogenization and exceeding material thermal limits. This presentation explores practical techniques and design features for reducing shear and melt temperature in co-rotating, intermeshing twin-screw compounding systems. Topics include machine design characteristics such as screw geometry and specific torque, along with the role of pressurization and strategies to mitigate excessive shear during extrusion.

Coperion finishing equipment (material handling components, feeders, extruders as well as auxiliary units) are used in the polyolefin industry since start of commercial production. Over the decades, the operational feedback from our valued customers and the rapid growth of plant capacities helped to drive our related developments to the highest standards in reliability, capacity and efficiency. Beside new component development for high capacity single train equipment, the debottleneck and reliability improvement solutions are offering our customers a variety of economic optimization opportunities. Case study examples with focus on capacity increase, pelletizing reliability as well as pellet handling improvements are presented to showcase typical potentials in operational plant environments.
