ZSK Mv¹⁴: More Torque for High-Volume ZSK Mv Extruders

The successor to the ZSK Mv PLUS twin screw extruder now features an increased specific torque of 14 Nm/cm³

The new ZSK Mv¹⁴ sets new benchmarks in compounding applications with high screw volume requirements. We have increased the specific torque of this twin screw extruder to 14 Nm/cm³, representing a 24% increase over the previous ZSK Mv PLUS. The result: the high-volume ZSK Mv¹⁴ achieves significantly higher throughput rates. In addition, it offers greater flexibility for processing demanding formulations, ensures even gentler product handling, and delivers outstanding product quality.

The introduction of the new ZSK 140 Mv¹⁴ expands both the application and performance spectrum of the series, adding a larger machine size for even higher throughput requirements.

More Performance for a Broad Range of Applications

The ZSK Mv¹⁴ series is distinguished by its exceptionally large free screw volume, featuring a Do/Di ratio of 1.8. This screw diameter ratio (outer to inner screw diameter) is ideally suited for extrusion applications with high volume requirements, such as processing materials with low bulk density, poor feed characteristics, or high levels of additives and fillers.

With the specific torque now increased to 14 Nm/cm³, these products can be processed significantly more efficiently than before. Compared to its predecessor, the ZSK Mv PLUS, the new ZSK Mv¹⁴ delivers throughput increases of up to 24%, without compromising process reliability.

At the same time, the ZSK Mv¹⁴ stands out for its exceptionally gentle product handling. Thanks to its large free screw volume, both the average shear forces and the thermal stress on the melt are significantly reduced. The result is consistently outstanding product quality.

This makes the new ZSK Mv¹⁴ the ideal solution for applications such as:

•    Recycling of plastic flakes, fibers, and regrind materials
•    Compounds with high additive loading, such as flame retardants or mineral fillers
•    Lightweight compounds containing hollow glass microspheres
•    Masterbatches with high pigment or additive concentrations
•    Biopolymers and other shear- or temperature-sensitive materials
•    Reactive extrusion processes requiring long residence times at low shear rates

More Torque for Greater Flexibility

The increased specific torque provides compounders with significantly greater processing flexibility. Desired throughput rates can now be achieved at lower screw speeds or with a smaller extruder size. As a result, both capital investment and operating costs can be reduced, while also lowering the system’s energy consumption and footprint.

At the same time, recipe flexibility is significantly enhanced. Applications that were previously feed-limited or pushed the former ZSK Mv PLUS to its torque limits can now be processed at substantially higher throughput rates. Recipes with high filler or additive loadings can also be compounded more economically, allowing manufacturers to expand their product portfolio while maintaining efficient and reliable production.

Proven Technology for Enhanced Performance

The performance increase of the ZSK Mv¹⁴ series is a result of targeted advancements in several key features of the ZSK extruder. A major contribution to the higher specific torque comes from the use of high-performance materials for the screw shafts. These materials have already proven their reliability over many years in the ZSK Mc¹⁸ series, ensuring dependable transmission of the increased torque from the gearbox to the screw elements.

As a result, the ZSK Mv¹⁴ combines its significantly enhanced performance capabilities with the renowned reliability, durability, and long service life that have made Coperion's ZSK technology a benchmark in the compounding industry.

New ZSK 140 Mv¹⁴ Expands the Performance Range

With the introduction of the ZSK 140 Mv¹⁴, we are adding a new machine size to the series. Featuring a screw diameter of 140 mm, the ZSK 140 Mv¹⁴ significantly expands the upper end of the product range and performance spectrum. It delivers throughput rates up to 40% higher than those of its next-smaller counterpart, the ZSK 125 Mv¹⁴.

The proven scale-up concept of the ZSK series also applies to the new ZSK 140 Mv¹⁴. Processes and performance parameters can be reliably transferred from smaller models to the new extruder.

Two ZSK Series: Maximum Performance for Every Processing Requirement

The new ZSK Mv¹⁴ underscores our strategy of offering the technically optimal extruder solution for every compounding application.

For applications with particularly high torque requirements, the ZSK Mc¹⁸ is available with a specific torque of 18 Nm/cm³ and a Do/Di ratio of 1.55. This series is especially well suited for processes where maximum torque transmission is the primary requirement.

We developed the ZSK Mv¹⁴ specifically for applications requiring high-volume processing. Its large free screw volume (Do/Di = 1.8) enables high throughput while ensuring particularly gentle product handling.
With these two series, each optimized for different requirements, we ensure that a ZSK extruder delivers the highest possible performance for the respective process. This not only improves Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), but also contributes to greater energy efficiency, maximum operational reliability, and consistently high product quality.
