Application

Developed as part of a research and development project at the University of Braunschweig in Germany (ProLIT) in collaboration with industry partners, the goal of Coperion's part in the project was to develop a method of depositing a consistent sheet of battery active material into the gap between calender rolls in order to create a thin film of material which is applied to a conductive foil in a later step.

The resulting roller feeder is ideal for dry coating processes that eliminate solvents and energy-intensive drying steps. It is engineered to promote a more economical and efficient process by ensuring consistent mass distribution and reducing scrap material. Constructed for durability, it handles challenging powder blends with ease. As part of an integrated manufacturing solution, the loss-in-weight roller feeder enhances process automation, material utilization, and overall productivity in cutting-edge battery production lines.

Design Features

Unique dual roller design ensures gentle and consistent material handling

The Loss-in-Weight Roller Feeder is a highly precise gravimetric solution designed for continuous feeding of dry electrode coating powder blends directly into the calender gap. The blends typically include active materials (anode or cathode) as well as conductive and binder additives. Ideal for laboratory and pilot production environments, the feeder is mounted on a robust platform scale utilizing high-accuracy SFT weighing technology.

The system features two replaceable rollers housed within a compact enclosure. The innovative dual roller design, with its dynamic feeding gap, ensures gentle material handling while preventing bridging. This guarantees uniform and consistent material application across a coating width adjustable up to 400 mm. The design promotes process stability and repeatable results, which is essential for optimizing and scaling the electrode production process to achieve high-quality results.

SFT Principle Coperion K-Tron
Vibrating wire weighing technology is at the core of our high-performance all-digital weighing scales

Coperion K-Tron’s unique vibrating wire weighing technology is based on the theory that the resonance frequency of an oscillating wire depends on the wire tension produced when a load is applied. Force, when derived from an applied weight, is transferred mechanically to the wire. The resonant frequency is measured to determine the weight. In Coperion K-Tron’s patented Smart Force Transducer (SFT), the signal is directly converted into a digital weight signal by a built-in microprocessor. The signal is then communicated noise-free via RS 485 to the controller. Every SFT provides a true 8,000,000:1 weight resolution in 20 ms and comes with a 5 year warranty.
